Get Ready for Cuteness Overload
Hello RGV Foodsters!! I apologize for my month hiatus but life has never been busier! I've missed writing for you guys greatly, but I promise that the wait has been worth it, for today, I bring you Birdies Cakes & Bakery out off McAllen, Texas.
Even from outside, this bakery/cakery/brunch lovers dream begins to tell us a magical story of whimsical magnitude. This place is the epitomy of classy with its dainty style, beautiful atmosphere, and adorable décor, but don't think its all about looks here, because the food was as delicious as the place is beautiful. Complete with a children's play house, an assortment of brilliant pastries, & a great menu to match, Birdies can be a great place for a girls day, a lunch meeting, a family outing, or even an adorable day date destination. (Guys, take my word for it, this is the best place to take a date!)
What We Drank
My boyfriend Raul likes his coffee fresh and strong. On this occasion he got his fix with this delicious Guero & Moreno, which is a really cool combination of delicious Horchata & a strong espresso shot. The mix of these makes for a very well balanced flavor as the espresso takes over, and the Horchata flavor lies mostly in the background adding just a hint of sweetness. Also present in every sip is a cinnamon-y kick (yes, cinnamon-y is a made up word.) Sometimes with espresso you can get a very bitter taste, but this Guerro & Moreno had a great consistency with almost no bitterness to it. I would recommend this drink for someone who enjoys strong coffee and would like to try something different with the same caffeinated benefits, but if you are a light coffee drinker like myself, who enjoys a cup of joe, but likes it on the light side, I would steer clear of this one.
Guero & Moreno- $3.15
Thankfuly the RGV has started to cool down after months of what seemed like scorching scorching heat, and this Hazelnut Latte is the perfect warm drink for a fresh & breezy afternoon. If you've never had a latte, it is a mix of expresso and hot steamed milk. The hazelnut in this particular drink adds sweetness to the foamy, milky latte, but doesn't overpower the delicious, freshly brewed coffee. I found this soothing, quite creamy, and delicious every sip of the way. A few other flavors of latte were available & I recommend this one to anyone who loves their coffee on the sweeter side.
Hazulnut coffee- $3.65
This yummy goodness was the Asparagus Soup. We both loved it and thought is was creamy, extremely flavorful, & extra cheesy. (Just my type of soup) The asparagus is cut into small bits & is accompanied with scallions & shredded cheese. As you can see it comes with crackers which Raul crumbled in the soup itself for an extra crunch (he wanted me to add that for ya'll bc he thought it was a genius move & I agree.) This is on the light side of a meal in my opinion, but Raul left satisfied but not too full. Also available are clam chowder, mushroom, or broccoli soup.
Bowl of Soup- $6.50 + side salad-$1.50(optional)
Although we were very full, crepes aren't easy to find in the RGV, so I just had to order one. This ones filling was cream cheese and strawberry preserves. I loved it! It was a great dessert. They were not stingy with their filling, which I appreciated greatly & the crepe was warm & soft. They have a variety of fillings: sweet & savory, and I look forward to trying each and every flavor in the future. Crepes are available alone or by the pair.
1 Crepe- $5
If there is one thing I love more than breakfast, it's breakfast with options. For a very reasonable price, the country breakfast is quickly becoming one of my Saturday afternoon favorites. This item includes (from left to right in picture) two strips of perfectly cooked crispy bacon, a side of rosemary potatos, fresh fruit (in this case tangerines & grapes), whole wheat toast, two eggs(made to your liking, but I recommend over hard), one medium cut slice of yummy ham, & flavorful refried beans. Grandma would be proud of this one. It is homey, yummy, and filling. Also included is a homemade salsa that isn't too spicy, but adds amazing flavor to whatever you poor it on. When you're looking for a well balanced breakfast, but still want to spoil yourself a little, the Country Breakfast could be just your thing.
Can't forget about the Pastries!!
At Birdies they've also have tons of sweet treats for us to try!! I can honestly say I had forgotten what a real cookie/cupcake tasted like!! They've got a few pastries on hand & plenty available as ordered! On the occasion I went they had butter cookies, coco cookies, marbled cookies, oatmeal chocolate chip, cranberry white chocolate, hojarascaws, & so many more! They also have apple turnovers, nutella pies, & delicious eclairs. This place is seriously a sweet tooths dream come true.
1/4 lbs cookies- $3.00
Worth Visiting for Every Occasion
Birdies has been open for about a year and a half and I couldn't be happier that my good friend recommended I visit. She thought I would love it and she was definitely right! After spending some time there I honestly felt without a care in the world. (Lord knows I've been needing that lately)
