Do You Love Them Yet?
What we sipped..
Although I do not feel qualified to inform you guys on alcoholic beverages for the most part, I couldn't live with myself if I didn't include one of their amazing wine cocktails. This particular one is sparkling strawberry Moscato over ice, with a ginger sugar rim. It is refreshing, not to strong, and just plain delicious. One glass of this will run you about $7 (quite a normal price for a great cocktail in the valley) A pitcher to share is $35.00, but luckily during Happy Hour it is $25.00.
Happy hour is everyday from 4pm-7pm, and all day on Mondays.
The Most Appetizing Appetizers
Order of Shrimp- $16 - More than worth it!! Thank me later.
I will begin by letting you guys know that I am not much of a mushroom person, but we were all very surprised when trying this because it was not what any of us expected. This was quite creamy, not too thick, and just a little peppery. This soup was quite hearty and I would definitely order again. Soups are made fresh daily, and at only $5, this is a great way to start your meal.
Chefs Freshly Made Selection- $5 (changes constantly)
One of a kind Entrees
If you are a fan of pork, look no further than HWB to fulfill all your pork desires with their tremendous Compart Duroc ground pork (info in link below,) topped with applewood bacon, caramelized onions & green apple, arugula, & melted brie cheese, on a jalapeno bun.
Pork can be a very heavy flavor, but they pick some of the best pork on the market & with the help of these amazing ingredients, this burger has great balance of flavors. It is crunchy, yet soft, and is truly is a one of kind explosion of flavors. Alongside to some crunchy pomme frittes, this is definitely a must try.
Pork Burger + Pomme Frittes- A steal at $14
Moving on, this is what I ordered on this particular day. I was worried because sometimes I believe lamb can be a little "gamey" but I was promised that I had nothing to worry about, and they were right. By the end of my meal, I had forgotten all my manners and was eating these (6) chops like they were lollipops.. The sauce on these is blue cheese cream (I despise blue cheese but OMG LOL WTF [as the kids say], this was not what anyone would expect blue cheese to taste like.) This also usually comes with a rustic arugula salad, but on this day, the food lords were on my side and they had an exquisite grilled onions and gouda bread pudding for a side. GUYS..... This side is like thanksgiving in one bite & I will never forget how it made me feel inside. Okay, in all seriousness, this was a fabulous dish.
Lamb Chops + side - $28
Steak Caprino + side- $35 (These two are not permanently on the HWB menu)
(Optional) Meatless Entrees
If you are into flavorful, al dente pasta, you need to try this linguine. A huge problem with pastas in many restaurants is how heavy they can be, but this dish seemed to me to be quite light, with just the right creamy texture. Even the fried chicken added on top was unbelievable crisp, & clean tasting. Also worth mentioning is that HWB makes their pasta in house. This is almost never seen in our community; It is not easy, so bravo HWB for taking the time to craft your own pastas.
Pasta- $10 + Fried Chicken-$6 = $16
Butternut Squash Risotto
Risotto is hard for me to judge because I have only tried it a handful of times, but our lovely friend from Made to Border was nice enough to accompany us on our friendly meal and said this dish was top notch. (FYI) Risotto is an Italian rice dish made with broth and really yummy veggies or protein. Add sliced garlic, fresh basil, grilled chicken, & of course, perfectly cooked butternut squash, & you've got yourself an experience of a dish. She said the creamy texture was great, the chicken well seasoned, & very importantly it was quite saucy.
Risotto + Chicken= $16
For Their Outstanding Contribution to other Visits...
-The Baked Brie is like dessert as an appetizer, and its such a cool dish. Brazos Valley Brie, homemade caramel, toasted almonds, fresh strawberries, with grilled foccacca(really good bread) & crostinis. This one's for all you cheese lovers out there. (You're welcome ;]) -$12
-Yahweh salad is a mix of local & seasonal greens(you had me at local), strawberry vinaigrette, dried cranberries, Caprino cheese, & fresh strawberries. Sounds simple, but sometimes simplicity is a best thing. -$8
-The Bee Sting flatbread is a really great twist on a flatbread. I say twist because the incorporate that sweet/spicy aspect so many of us love in this yummy dish. Spicy marinara, Capicola(Italian pork cold cut), fresh milk Mozzarella, and locally harvested Habanero honey. -$14
Now if I could just get like a sampler with these three on it HWB, you'd make all my foodie dreams come true.... Your move guys.
I Don't Think your Ready, for thisJelly!
(Dessert. That's what I meant)
I believe the desserts change once in a while (I could be mistaken), but here are a few they had about two weeks ago when we were lucky enough to visit.
Strawberry Cheescake is usually a fave, but this blew all other cheesecakes out of the water. Strawberry bavarois, marscapone, meringue, compressed strawberries(ohhh fancy), and citrus strawberry ice cream are beautifully married in what really looks like a work of art. When I tried this, I knew something special had just happened. Strawberry cheesecake will never be the same. It's a good thing....
When I heard Chocolate Crème Brulee was an option, I was quite excited, & I not disappointed. Sesame-cocoa rib tuille, passion fruit whip, berries, with a torched sugar crust(this is the Brulee part) make for an exquisite dessert. The chocolate makes the dessert a little more bitter than brulee usually is, and it was a pleasant change; Really elevated the dish. Not all dessert has to be in-your-face-sweet and I think this dessert proves that well.
Chocolate Crème Brulee- $9
Yup, they even do homemade ice cream. With Blue Bells absence in stores all around the country, you should take advantage and try HWBs homemade ice cream. I don't know if you'll go back to store bought after trying a scoop or two of their stuff. This one is Oreo cookies and strawberry; A better pair is hard to find. It was rich, fresh, sweet, and just plain delicious.
House Ice cream- $2
S'more chocolate espresso mouse topped with maple marshmallow, drunken cherries, puffed rice, and hickory smoke waft in a beautiful glass. need I say more? This honestly made me feel like I was sitting over a campfire making some really grown up s'mores. Once again, I think HWB has a work of art on their hands. The smokiness combines with the sweetness of the caramelized mellow and is a great contrast to the tartness of those cherries. I can't stop staring at this picture, no joke. I hope this dessert is available next time I pay them a visit.
I apologize for such a long post, but I just love to give credit where credit is due. I feel like House. Wine, & Bistro is about more than just the food. I like to think that people deserve to eat food made with a purpose & this restaurant does just that. The restaurants I support & write about are here for more than the money & this is obvious in their food, in their care for their guests, and in the ambiance they generate for us. The people of HWB, just like many of the restaurants I have blogged about, have a passion for what they do & the quality shows. We applaud HWB and all other restaurants like them for making food with a purpose in our community.
