Where to Eat Healthy While Supporting Local
FYI- I have read many studies about the consumption of red meat (or processed meat), & many claim that they can lead or are linked to high cholesterol, heart disease, and certain cancers. It has also been mentioned in some studies that those who consume red meat on a daily basis live shorter lives, therefore you will find no red meat on these lists. I am by no means a doctor or dietitian, so when reading this, please keep in mind, I am just a foodie who wants to share the healthy options I have found!! Enjoy!!
The Loretto- Mission
Our list begins with one of my favorite hot spots for delicious brunch & lunch. In the short few months The Loretto has been open, it has won a huge place in my heart. It has amazing sandwiches, salads, and pastas. (Can't forget the pastries!!! Ferrero Roche macaroons??? Come on now!! lol ) I will say not all their options are healthy, but they are made with the greatest of attention and the ingredients are always top notch.
My pick- Their Strawberry Pecan Salad- $10
You can add chicken $12, shimp $14 or my favorite(pictured here), salmon $16.
City Cafe- McAllen
I've only been to City Cafe a few times but their menu has many amazing options for those seeking to watch what they are eating. (& those who aren't as well) From plenty of delicious and fun salads, to samplers including hummus, couscous, & grilled veggies, City Cafe has a little something for everyone. They've got wraps, tuna, veggie pitas, fruit with granola, some fresh takes on pastas, some health friendly sides, and grilled portabello mushrooms. (#yum)
My pick- The Pesto Grilled Salmon- $12.95 (Can you tell I'm a huge fan of salmon?)
Served on fresh spinach and grilled veggies, the simpleness of this dish is really what makes it so great. The veggies are perfectly seasoned and the pesto is made with fresh basil (I asked for cilantro pesto and they were more than accomidating.) It was amazing)
Nectar Avenue- Downtown Mcallen
I have already spoken about Nectar Avenue Mobile Juice Bar before, but I have to say that a healthy food truck, in a food truck park containing mostly tacos and junk food is a brilliant idea. If you're heading downtown for a night out, hanging in the art district, or looking for a calm place to hang with friends, Nectar Avenue is a haven for those of us looking for a light snack or something delicious and nutritious to drink. (not to mention you don't get any of the bloating!)
Eastons Eatsies- La Joya
Working in La Joya ISD I definitely have a difficult time finding healthy options on a daily basis. Eastons Eatsies has been an amazing place for days when I need something fresh and delicious. They have beautiful sandwiches, extremely filling salads, and on Fridays they have chefs specials that are to die for!
My pick- This amazing Lemon Pepper salad with grilled chicken, avocado, cucumbers, apple slices, fresh cheese, and homemade crostini. (ugh, I die! Soooo good!)
I literally ate this salad two days in a row, it was huge and it was unbelievably filling.
(He also offers military/law enforcement discounts. What a cool guy!)
Greens & Lemons=Sharyland/Mission Area
When I feel I need an extra boost of energy, Greens & Lemons has provided me with amazing entrees, botanas, carpaccios, salads, sides, drinks, health shots, breakfast, juices, smoothies, and pastries. The flavor of everything ive ever eaten there is always so great and unexpected. When dining here, it is easy to tell that the most important thing (next to flavor), is health. They do offer vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options.
My pick- This Pistachio and Lemon Crusted Salmon
Impeccably cooked with some of the most delicious sauce I've ever had, this dish is very well balanced. The quinoa salad and the jicama salad it came with had me a little on edge at first, (I wanted something I was more familiar with) but by the end of my meal I was wishing I had more of everything.
The Juicy Joint located inside The Healing Factory
| || |
The Healing Factory is not just a really cool place for some yoga & meditation, they also have The Juicy Joint which offers organic cold pressed juices & an unbelievable vegan menu. Some of their options are chickpea salad sandwich, chipotle black bean veggie burgers, lentil & red bean sloppy joe, and quinoa, hummus, & avocado salad, just to name a few.
The tacos featured in this picture are the black bean veggie tacos and include, of course, black beans, corn, avocado, greens, onions, tomato's, cilantro, and yummy dressing. Their menu is very fresh and organic, so feel free to check their fb or instagram out for more information on anything food/spiritual therapy related. (both The Healing Factory & The Juicy Joint have instagrams!)
The Green Owl- North Mcallen
The Green Owl is my favorite place to treat myself to now a days due to the fact that they have a ridiculous amount of vegan (and non vegan) options, including my all time favorite, PASTRIES!!!!!!!!! I am getting a little ahead of myself though, I can truthfully say that many of their menu options are well worth a shout out. They've got Vegan cheese dips, zucchini noodles, vegan nachos, tamales, & lasagna, organic chicken chilaquiles, gluten free enchiladas, turkey meatloaf, and so much more.
My pick- Everything!!!
I really love many of their dishes, but pictured here are the stuffed avocados, which include grapes, celery, cashews, alfalfa sprouts, & vegan mayo & comes with multigrain chips. This is a very filling dish and could not be better for you.
